DF Steel Pipe Delivers Over 20000 Metric Tons of API 5L X52 SSAW Spiral Welded Pipes with Concrete Weight Coating for Major Cross-Country Water Transmission Pipeline Project in Nigeria
DF Steel Pipe has completed a landmark delivery of over 20,000 metric tons of SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) steel pipes with concrete weight coating (CWC) and sacrificial bracelet anode cathodic protection for a major cross-country water transmission pipeline project in Nigeria. The order involved 8 breakbulk vessel shipments over a 4-month logistics campaign, with pipes delivered to Lagos Port Complex (Apapa) and Onne Port (Port Harcourt) for onward truck transport to the pipeline right-of-way spanning multiple Nigerian states.
1. SSAW Spiral Pipe Manufacturing and Concrete Weight Coating Specifications
The SSAW pipes were manufactured to API 5L X52 PSL1 specification with outer diameters of 42 inches (1,067mm) and 48 inches (1,219mm) with wall thicknesses from 12.7mm to 15.9mm depending on pipeline operating pressure requirements and soil loading conditions. SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) manufacturing was selected for this project due to its cost-effectiveness for large-diameter water transmission pipelines, where the helical weld seam provides uniform mechanical properties around the pipe circumference and enables efficient production of very large diameters up to 3,500mm (140 inches). Each pipe joint was fabricated at 12-meter length with standard API 5L bevel ends (30-degree bevel angle with 1.6mm root face) prepared for field butt welding using manual or semi-automatic welding processes at the construction site.
The concrete weight coating (CWC) was applied at DF Steel Pipe coating facility using the impingement method, where a dense concrete mixture (density 2,400-3,100 kg/m³) is applied over a corrosion-protected pipe surface at thicknesses ranging from 45mm to 65mm, depending on the buoyancy analysis for specific swampy terrain and water body crossing sections. CWC serves the critical function of providing negative buoyancy in areas where the pipeline traverses swamps, marshes, rivers, and areas with high groundwater tables — conditions extensively encountered along the Nigerian pipeline route through the Niger Delta region. The CWC also provides mechanical protection against third-party damage from anchors, fishing activities, and construction equipment in populated areas.
2. Nigeria Water Infrastructure Market and Pipeline Development Context
Nigeria faces significant water infrastructure challenges despite being Africa largest economy and most populous nation (estimated 230+ million population in 2026). Access to safely managed drinking water services remains below 30% of the population, and urban water supply infrastructure in major cities including Lagos, Kano, Ibadan, Abuja, and Port Harcourt operates at a fraction of required capacity due to aging infrastructure, insufficient investment, and rapid urbanization. The Nigerian government National Water Resources Master Plan identifies over 3,000 kilometers of new water transmission pipelines required to connect major water treatment plants, dams, and reservoirs to urban and peri-urban demand centers across the country 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB), and China Exim Bank have committed billions of dollars to Nigerian water infrastructure projects over the 2025-2035 period.
This pipeline project, one of the single largest water transmission initiatives in West Africa in the past decade, will deliver treated water to an estimated 15 million people across multiple states, significantly improving public health outcomes, reducing waterborne disease incidence, and enabling economic development in currently water-stressed regions. DF Steel Pipe is proud to be a key steel pipe supplier for West Africa, supporting critical water, oil and gas, and construction infrastructure development across Nigeria, Ghana, and the broader ECOWAS region with API-certified steel pipe products and reliable export logistics.
